The Alyson Kaplan Memorial Foundation (AIK), established in February 2003, is about to launch the Global Safe Haven Network, which will be comprised of both free and membership-based services to aid young travelers in distress. The Global Safe Haven Network will include a comprehensive web site for its users with an individualized web page. Once a traveler has logged in their itinerary, they will be updated daily on the region in which they are traveling and will be advised of any alerts that may be of importance to their well-being. Travelers will also be provided with a toll-free emergency hotline for information regarding medical help, transportation needs, loss or separation from travel groups and, most importantly, the locations of "Global Safe Havens" to serve as "safe" shelters. In 2003, Alyson Kaplan (aged 20) was murdered while traveling through London, England. Her parents, Donald and Joanne Kaplan of Westlake Village, started the organization in their daughter's memory to help reduce the risks of danger for young travelers by providing a global network of proper support services.
