The Alyson Ilene Kaplan Memorial Foundation is a tax-exempt organization under the Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Service, Federal I.D.# 27-0055154. The Organization depends largely upon private donations to cover operational expenses, but also seeks some funding. Alyson's family has established a memorial foundation in her name to advocate improvements in travel safety for students. Travel abroad is an essential element in helping young people understand and appreciate different cultures, and it must be available. However, any young person, from any country, could have met Alyson’s fate, through no fault of his or her own, in any country. There are ways to reduce these risks and the Alyson Ilene Kaplan Memorial Foundation is committed to helping.

Some areas of emphasis will be changes in policies related to the public transportation so many young people use in their travels. Other focus could include easy access to telephone help lines in all languages, easy access to embassy assistance, "safe" shelter in close proximity to public transportation and popular youth destinations, and better screening for student short stay housing.
